DIY: Poochie Pops

Recently, I've noticed my puppies have a fetish for ice cubes. It all started when Jeff would fill up their water and put a few in there and they would pull them out play with them. Just the other day, I was grabbing some and dropped them on the floor. The pups were so quick underneath me, they stole them and ran off. The silly boys were chasing each other trying to take them and really enjoyed munching on it.

I thought that was really random, because its just ice! Plus, we spend a fortune on dog treats and they go through them so quickly and here they are eating and enjoying ice cubes! That got me thinking!

I had seen online a while ago doggie popcicles! I remember reading that they used chicken or beef broth and just froze it. So I thought I'd give it a whirl.

Here are my Poochie Pops!

1 TSP: Beef Broth (granules)
8 OZ: Hot Water
(**Note: These measurements gave me about half of the ice tray, so I did it twice to fill up the whole tray!**)

{one} Grab yourself some granules and an ice cube tray.
{two} Pour 1 TSP of granules into 8 OZ of hot water.
{three} Stir until dissolve.
{four} Pour broth into ice cube tray.
{five} Freeze

And Serve!

My boys enjoyed these Poochie Pops so much they were practically fighting over them! :)

Here are some pictures of them enjoying their cool new treat!

(**Note: I would highly recommend serving these outside, just so you don't get broth all over your house....learned that lesson quickly!**)

Alternative Method (if you don't have ice cube trays)

The first time I made this for my pups, I didn't own any ice cube trays, so I had to improvise. I chose to pour the mixture directly into a zip-lock baggie and placed that into a second baggie before placing into the freezer. This helped eliminate my fear of the bag leaking in the freezer. Once it was frozen, I pulled out the bag and broke the broth/ice into chunks and gave it to my boys that way.

More Ways to Make It Fun

Another way to make these Poochie Pops more exciting, you can use candy making molds instead of ice cube trays! These come in a variety of assortments and I pick mine up at Michaels Arts and Crafts. You can then create all sorts of fun bite-sized frozen treats for your favorite companion!

Another fun alternative way is to make it into a chew stick form. You can do this by purchasing water bottle ice cube molds. I would recommend letting the ice form in the freezer and before its totally frozen, insert the chew sticks. I know my boys love chew sticks and I bet they'd enjoy this  too!

What treats do you like giving to your pups? Do you prefer store bought or home-made?

If you make these fun treats for your pups, I would love to see pics of them enjoying it! Please use   so I can see them! :)

    1. Yeah, I can't wait to try it then. So far, we've been lucky and haven't been hit yet with crummy weather, so they've been enjoying them recently. I miss the warm weather already!
